This is the car that in 1954 might have 'killed' the Corvette.
So, Chevrolet, being GM's big sales and profit division, campaigned to GM to 'kill' this car.
Wh en Chevy was coming out with its 6-cylinder sports car with its 2-speed 'powerglide' transmission and side curtains, there was a sports car from Olds with a big old V-8 engine with power windows.
So, GM said, 'no' to Oldsmobile on building this car.
The world's rarest automobile: a 1954 Concept Old's Rocket F88 - the only one in existence.
John S. Hendricks (Discovery Communications founder), paid in excess of $3 million to acquire this 1954 Oldsmobile F-88 Convertible Concept Car.

Dubai Car show 2010

Two months before it opens, the Abu Dhabi International Motor Show (ADIMS) has become the largest and most comprehensive motor show in the Middle East this year. Already, 80 per cent of floor space has been sold to exhibitors, with big names such as Ferrari, Toyota and General Motors already confirmed.

Taking place from December 7-11 at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, ADIMS will be held under the patronage of His Highness Lt. Gen. Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister & Minister of Interior UAE. Its scope involves showing off some of the world’s most amazing vehicles mixed with a range of live activities and mouthwatering competitions.

The thirteenth edition of ADIMS has been designed to offer an interactive show for the whole family that also features a number of major product launches as well as a range of exciting new developments. The last Abu Dhabi show, held in 2008, attracted a record 50,000 visitors, while organisers expect a significant increase in spectator numbers this year round.

ADIMS has a strong pedigree of consistent success, which is why global manufacturers see it as a launchpad for giving debuts to their vehicles. Out of around 400 models from over 30 global vehicle manufacturers, there were as many as 19 regional launch premiers at the 2008 show. These included the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder, Cadillac’s CTS-V and Escalade, and the Toyota Sequoia.

“The beauty of this show is that it attracts the eyes of the region and the world,” said Peter McConnell, Director of the Abu Dhabi International Motor Show 2010. “With so much attention given to the big names, the numerous automotive-related accessories and services that appear at the show also benefit from being in such close proximity. This is truly a show for all exhibitors, and it shows. While the 2008 event was the biggest so far, this year will see it as the biggest in the region. All exhibitors see ADIMS as a show that works for them and returns on their investment.”

McConnell explained that, like 2008, this year’s ADIMS would not be lacking in launches and announcements. “With a raft of new developments to be announced over the coming weeks, and some of the world’s biggest automotive brands already confirmed, ADIMS will definitely live up to its slogan – Ready for the Thrill…! There has never been a better time to check out the latest developments in the Middle East automotive industry.”

The ADIMS 2010 will take place against a backdrop of strong recovery in the Middle East automotive market, with the UAE capital playing a leading role. Premium brands across the region have reported growth of over 10 per cent during 2010, while volume brands are also experiencing a return to form. Over recent years, the Middle East has increasingly made its presence felt on the global car market, with tie-ups between Kuwait and Aston Martin, Bahrain and McLaren, and Abu Dhabi and Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari.

Reinforcing the confidence of the industry, both in relation to the market and ADIMS itself, Al Hilal Bank has once again been confirmed as the show’s Exclusive Bank Platinum Sponsor, with an emphasis placed on its on-site car financing offerings. Mohamed Zaquot, Head of Personal Banking, said: “Al Hilal bank is pleased to sponsor the ADIMS for the second consecutive time. Our participation this year will build on the success of Al Hilal’s ‘Walk-in, drive out’ innovative initiative, which we launched to facilitate owning your dream car. Customers will be able to select their favourite cars available at the show, obtain necessary auto finance, insure and register the car, then drive home their newly owned vehicle within one hour”.

Thai Flood 2011

Terrified and with nowhere to go but the small areas of dry land that remain, these are the animal victims of the flooding that has devastated Thailand.
In Ayutthaya, a distressed group of elephants is facing its second month cut off by the stagnant waters as they shelter on a concrete island at an animal sanctuary.
The group of 17 include seven animals aged under four years who were too small to flee when the rest of their herd were led to safety in the city north of Bangkok.

Don Muang district alone - which the government says is nearly 100 percent flooded - is home to 166,000 people.
Many in Bangkok's 15 flooded districts have likely moved in with relatives or friends in unaffected areas, but swamped neighborhoods still show signs that life goes on despite disaster.

Along Don Muang's Chang Akat Uthit Road, the neighborhood duck restaurant was closed.
So were the two convenience stores, the gold shop and even the Party House pub.

A spokesman for the plant said: 'We don't know when work will resume.'
The floods have killed more than 380 in Thailand with areas of the country cut off from food and aid supplies

In the worst floods in half a century, many of Bangkok's government-run shelters sit largely empty, even as the submerged streets in some of the city's hardest-hit areas are still bustling with a constant stream of people wading, floating and boating in and out.

The city says it has no estimate for the actual number of Bangkok's nine million residents affected by the deluge, but population figures suggest they have impacted a far greater number than the 11,000 who have moved into the city's evacuation centers.

The car wash was deserted except for two Honda hatchbacks submerged in the driveway, and a construction site with the sign advertising "Cheap Land For Sale" was quiet.

But in the middle of the street people were ferrying supplies into the neighborhood, some carrying jugs of cooking oil, sacks of rice or styrofoam boxes of fresh food, while others were leaving, carrying valua bles such as TVs and electric fans toward drier ground.

The Thai Red Cross Society, said the group has been sending 3,000-3,500 relief packs every day into flood-hit neighborhoods in Bangkok as well as the nearby provinces of Pathum Thani and Nonthaburi.

Saved: A leopard kitten is bottle fed in a wildlife rescue centre in Phnom Tamao zoo near Phnom Penh, Cambodia, afte r the region also suffered flooding. The tiny leopard was found with another by a fisherman near floodwaters

Elsewhere in Thailand, flooding at the Honda motor factory at Ayutthaya province has caused immense damage to the local industry.

But it has also led to a shortage of essential car parts to UK, U.S. and Canada Honda plants resulting in production being halved in those countries.

Workers at Honda's Swindon factory have been told work has been cancelled for tomorrow and Friday.

The adults among them - including two males and a pregnant female - can frolic in the water, stretch their limbs and cool down. But the little ones cannot because they would drown if they stepped into the 6-foot-deep water.

Yes the elephants are upset. I'm upset too,' keeper Parinnam said. "We're the same, humans and elephants.'

Elsewhere, hundreds of animals living in Safari World, Bangkok, were rescued and moved to higher ground after their enclosures were flooded overnight. Zebras and deer were among the animals affected.
